Hamr Na Jezeře – Lake, History and Cycling Routes

Hamr na Jezeře brings together a waterside landscape, local history and active exploration within a compact thematic area. The town is therefore suitable for travellers who do not want to limit their stay to a single attraction, but instead want to choose between the lake, culture, hiking and cycling.

Sandy Beach and Hamerské jezero

Sportovní areál Pláž has a 230-metre-long sandy beach in a pine park. Boats and pedal boats are also rented at Sportovní areál Pláž. Those who want to spend time by the water can therefore find not only a beach here, but also an opportunity to experience Hamerské jezero from the water.

Hamerské jezero receives its water from the side stream Hamerská strouha, which belongs to the Ploučnice. For anglers, the lake is a popular and attractive fishing area. These two characteristics give the body of water a varied character: it is both a landscape-defining feature of the town and a specific destination for spending time by the water.

Děvín Castle and the History of the Town

South of Hamr na Jezeře, on the far side of Hamerské jezero, lie the ruins of Děvín Castle, dating from the 13th century. Děvín Castle was founded before 1250 by the Markvartici family. For an excursion with a historical focus, the landscape around the lake is combined here with the traces of a medieval castle complex.

The later development of Hamr na Jezeře was also shaped by the use of the surrounding area. In the 16th century, Hamr na Jezeře had a mill on the Ploučnice as well as several ironworks where limonite extracted from nearby Děvín and its surroundings was processed. The Neo-Gothic Chapel of Our Lady, Help of Christians stands on Křížový vrch above Hamr na Jezeře. At the end of the 19th century, Hamr na Jezeře became a sought-after spa town. The town’s history thus extends from castles and craftsmanship to the later spa tradition.

Circular Trail and Cycling Route

For walks through the surrounding area, the Hamerský okruh is a clear option: the circular trail is 9 kilometres long and leads through the area around Hamr na Jezeře. It is suitable for families with children.

Cyclists can join Stage 2 of the Ploučnice Cycle Route in Hamr na Jezeře. It leads to Stráž pod Ralskem and Mimoň. The Ploučnice Cycle Route is signposted as Cycle Route No. 15 and runs from the source of the Ploučnice at the foot of Ještěd to the mouth of the Ploučnice into the Elbe in Děčín. The town is thus connected both with a specific stage and with a route described on a regional level.
