Horní Maxov combines marked trails, traces of history and a landscape with mountains in the surrounding area. For your stay, you will find various points of interest here: a circular trail focusing on freedom, a short historic Stations of the Cross, memorial sites in the village and excursion destinations in the wider region. Depending on your interests, you can choose between outdoor activity, local history and regional cultural attractions.

Trails with different focuses

The Stezka svobody connects three Linden Trees of Freedom planted in 2018 in Lučany nad Nisou, Horní Maxov and Jindřichov. The route is 12.7 km long and marked with circular trail signs in the colours of the tricolour. Twelve stations feature glass cubes and metal bands bearing quotations on the subject of freedom. The trail thus combines a clearly defined route with a distinct historical and symbolic theme. The combination of trail markers and stations makes the circular route an experience in its own right.

The Maxovská křížová cesta begins in Horní Maxov near the former chapel. The marked trail is 0.5 km long and ends at the Seibt Spring below the Slovanka lookout tower. Three information boards display historical photographs about the history of Horní Maxov and the origins of the Stations of the Cross. Compared with the 12.7 km Stezka svobody, this is a considerably shorter route, so when planning your itinerary you can choose between two trails of different lengths. The trail length therefore creates a clear contrast with the long circular route; at the same time, the focus is on the history of Horní Maxov and the origins of the Stations of the Cross.

History in Horní Maxov

The Maxov cemetery also tells the story of the village. It was ceremonially opened on All Souls' Day in 1890 and regularly used until the end of the 1940s. Its location on a sunny southern slope above the centre of Horní Maxov connects this historic site with a wide-open landscape: from there, views extend across a shallow depression with meadows, small groves and scattered houses.

The local cultural history also includes the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of the Lord in Horní Maxov, built in 1910. Together with the cemetery and the historic photographs along the Maxovská křížová cesta, it creates a picture of the village's history that goes beyond individual dates and reveals different forms of remembrance in one place.

Mountains and regional excursion destinations

The mountains of Mariánská hora and Královka are located in the immediate vicinity of Horní Maxov. Further afield, there are also Černá Studnice and Pustina. When planning excursions, you can therefore distinguish between mountains in the immediate vicinity and those farther away. Depending on the desired scope of the excursion, different parts of the region may be considered.

For an excursion in the wider region, Zamek Gryf Castle and Valdštejn Church are additional cultural destinations. Another signposted connection is the “Od Hrabětic do města Jablonce” route. It leads over the Maxovský hřbet ridge and through Horní Maxov on the way to Jablonec nad Nisou. This connection complements the short trails and historic sites in Horní Maxov with a route over the Maxovský hřbet ridge towards Jablonec nad Nisou.
