Pilgrimage and history at Mariánská Hora

The pilgrimage tradition to the Chapel of the Virgin Mary was revived in 1990. Its history, however, goes back further: a chapel was built on Mariánská Hora in the 16th century for a statue of the Virgin Mary found by a former local resident named Bittner. After local parishioners had restored a new statue of the Virgin Mary, the chapel was reconsecrated in 1995.

The Mariánské schody form a historical connection to the chapel. They are located in the eastern part of the Mariánská Hora settlement, about 300 metres from the chapel, and connect Mariánská Hora with Desná. A simple Stations of the Cross route once ran along the stairs. According to tradition, there were originally 365 steps. During your visit, a specific route, religious history and a traditional distinctive feature thus come together here.

Ski lift and signposted trails

The Mariánská Hora ski lift is located below the mountain on the southern slope, at an altitude of over 700 metres. The lift is 260 metres long and serves a slope with a vertical difference of 60 metres. Alongside the pilgrimage history, these clear figures give the place a distinct mountain character, without suggesting that the ski lift is part of a larger winter sports area.

A route marked with snowshoe symbols begins at the crossroads by the Mariánské schody in Albrechtice v Jizerských horách and leads to the Protržená Dam. This documents another specific route between the starting point by the Mariánské schody and a historic destination in the surrounding landscape.

Protržená Dam as an excursion destination

The Protržená Dam can be reached from Mariánská Hora. After parking there, a marked route continues for 3.7 kilometres on foot. In the immediate vicinity of the dam, there is a monument to the victims of the disaster, an educational trail and information boards with detailed information. Twelve wooden sculptures complement the site. A footbridge also connects the two banks of the river there.

This creates a varied choice of topics for families with different interests: at the chapel and the Mariánské schody, tradition is the focus, while the Protržená Dam combines historical remembrance, information and landscape. The signposted snowshoe route describes a separate approach to the destination and should not automatically be equated with the marked 3.7-kilometre route.

Mariánskohorské boudy on the ridge

The Mariánskohorské boudy are also part of the character of the surrounding area. They are located on the Mariánskohorský Ridge and form a shepherds' enclave of the chalet type found in the Krkonoše Mountains. The enclave was founded in 1705 and is considered a popular destination for tourists. Together with the chapel, the stairs, the ski lift and the Protržená Dam, it shows that Mariánská Hora is shaped by more than just a single attraction.
