Slemeno: Cycling Routes, Landscape and Regional History
Accommodation in Slemeno
Slemeno between Cycling Routes, the Valley Landscape and Regional History
Slemeno forms part of the continuous built-up area of the municipality of Dolní Kalná in the valley along the upper course of the Kalenský potok. The village connects this landscape with several cycling routes and cultural and historical landmarks. If you would like to combine different themes during your trip, you will find starting points here for cycling tours, local history and views of the Krkonoše Mountains.
Cycling with Different Route Profiles
The marked cycling route 4302 runs via Horní Olešnice to Slemeno. The 47 km “Circuit from Kalná via Kateřina” route passes through Slemeno and is intended for experienced cyclists.
Another route is cycling route 4294. It leads from the starting point of the cycling routes in Dolní Kalná to Hostinné. After reaching the centre of Dolní Kalná, the route follows the cemetery wall and continues along the forest to the swimming pool.
The “Stará zemská stezka” route also adds a distinctive landscape element. It offers views of the panorama of the Krkonoše Mountains, called Krkonoše in Czech, with Černá hora as a prominent mountain and, in places, views of Sněžka, the Schneekoppe. It thus complements the cycling routes leading through Slemeno with an experience focused on the landscape and its distant views.
Small Monuments with Their Own Character
Slemeno is home to a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk with reliefs on its pedestal. There is also a monument to the victims of the First World War in the village, depicting a woman gazing into the distance. Another detail is a wayside shrine whose niche is empty; the engraved year 1770 has been preserved. Together, these landmarks illustrate various forms of local remembrance: a statue of a saint, a war memorial and a wayside shrine with a visible date.
The Lázně Church, located in the surroundings of Slemeno, also forms part of the area’s cultural orientation. In the wider regional area are the ruins of Spalona Stražnica and Mount Zadní Žalý. The mountains Černá hora, Tetřeví vrch and Přední Žalý are situated closer to Slemeno. These different spatial references are helpful if you want to distinguish between discoveries in the village, destinations in the surrounding area and more extensive regional excursions.
A Place between a Stream and Clay-Coloured Water
The local stream is also part of the landscape. After rain, it becomes turbid because of the red clay typical of the area.
When choosing a hotel or other accommodation in Slemeno, you can first consider which focus should define your trip: the cycling routes leading through the village, the monuments in Slemeno or the mountains and regional destinations in the surrounding area. To continue searching for suitable travel destinations in the Czech Republic, you can also include Pec Pod Snežkou, Dolni Kalna, Vlčkovice V Podkrkonoší, Cermná U Vrchlabí, Kocléřov, Trautnau, Velké Svatoňovice and Borovnice U Staré Paky in your plans.
