Historic buildings with a story of their own

One of the town’s defining buildings is the Baroque Church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist. It was built between 1681 and 1686 and thus represents an era that continues to shape Solnice architecturally. There is also a Marian column from 1714 in the square in front of the town hall. The town hall itself is an Empire-style building dating from 1829–1835. The term Empire style refers to a form of expression influenced by Classicism in the early 19th century, distinct from the later Neorenaissance. Chronologically, the Marian column therefore falls between the Baroque church and the later Empire-style town hall. Together, these three details illustrate different historical layers of the town without requiring you to focus on a single era.

An older landmark is “Zámeček”. The complex was built in 1558 as a fortress by Benjamín z Vlknova; its exterior appearance has largely been preserved. Solnice therefore offers, alongside ecclesiastical and public architecture, an example of a fortified historic complex. The town’s history also includes the Neorenaissance cemetery church of Nejsvětějšího srdce Páně. It was built in 1903–1904 by F. Lorenc from Žamberk, but is currently not open to the public because of its poor structural condition. This restriction is important when planning an outing: the building is a documented part of the townscape, but it is not currently an accessible visitor attraction.

Hiking and cycling with specific details

The Solnice Salt Trail complements the historical themes with current route options. New hiking and cycling routes were offered for 2026. For the 2026 edition, the start and presentation took place in Solnice at the Společenský dům between 7:00 and 9:30 a.m. This time information applies to the 2026 event and should therefore not be understood as a general daily time window.

The Solnice–Rychnov nad Kněžnou cycle path runs entirely away from the main road. The route is suitable for bicycles, roller skates and bicycle trailers.
