Meziluží – Nature, Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Meziluzi
Meziluží connects trails through the landscape of Český ráj with an unusually vivid local history. The blue-marked hiking trail from Vyskeř to Podkost leads through Meziluží. At the same time, a large hill, local clay and the development of the natural areas tell the story of a rural setting whose character can be discovered on several levels. If you would like to combine nature, activity and historical details on your trip, the village offers various points of interest for doing so.
Hiking and Cycling Around Meziluží
For a hike, the blue-marked trail from Vyskeř to Podkost leads through Meziluží. A 42.2 km route through Český ráj runs via Dobšice and Meziluží; from the Podvyskeřský mlýn turnoff, it follows the yellow trail to Věžák. The 42.2 km distance helps you estimate the scope of the cycling trip in advance. When planning, the different sections along marked trails, roads and through forests are also relevant alongside the destinations. Another cycling route from Kost Castle leads to the road to Dobšice and Meziluží. Beyond Meziluží, this cycling route runs through forests to Road No. 279, which leads to Žehrov. The two routes thus connect Meziluží with Český ráj as well as with a forest section in the direction of Žehrov.
This allows you to choose when planning between a longer circular route through Český ráj and routes linking Meziluží with prominent destinations such as Kost Castle, Dobšice or Žehrov. The distance information helps distinguish the various excursion directions without viewing the village merely as a point of passage.
Natural Monument and Wet Landscape
The Meziluží Natural Monument lies about 1 km northwest of the village of Meziluží. The area near Meziluží has been described as one of two known sites of the green-winged orchid (Orchis morio) in the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area. This botanical detail stands alongside a landscape also shaped by its management history: the old orchard on the area near Meziluží was used as a sheep pasture until 1994; grazing resumed in 2001.
Today, areas within the Meziluží natural site are mown or grazed by sheep and goats. In Meziluží as well, after woody growth was removed, the areas were mown or grazed by sheep and goats. The name Meziluží is associated with its location between wet meadows and alluvial forests. Wet habitats, open areas and the botanical speciality of the green-winged orchid are therefore among the defining natural features of Meziluží.
Local History with Linen and Červenice
A road did not reach Meziluží until 1883. Linen produced in the past was bleached on a large hill near Meziluží. The local clay-rich clay known as Červenice was used in Meziluží to repair tiled stoves, bread ovens and clay threshing floors in barns.
