Markvartice U Sobotky combines an impressive local history with unusual traces in the landscape. If you are looking for a place to stay with cultural monuments, archaeological discoveries, events and a marked hiking trail, Markvartice offers several different ways to explore the area: you can learn about the history of the Church of St. Giles, view the preserved ramparts of a Celtic sanctuary or get to know the village through its historic buildings and traditions.

The Church of St. Giles and the Historic Village Centre

The Church of St. Giles is documented as a parish church as early as 1348. It acquired its present appearance through a Baroque reconstruction in the second half of the 18th century. The complex also includes a mortuary. The entire cultural monument complex of the church is listed in the Register of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic.

A preserved two-storey house with an arcaded gallery also stands near the church. Archaeological remains of a fortress, mentioned around 1340 and abandoned after 1345, lie within the built-up area of the village. An early medieval settlement has also been identified in the village centre. These traces make Markvartice a place where different eras follow closely upon one another: the medieval fortress, the early medieval settlement and the later Baroque church belong to different chapters of the same local history.

Ramparts, Trees and Distinctive Landscape Traces

Southwest of Markvartice, a Celtic sanctuary can be identified by preserved ramparts at a place called “V šancích”. The alignment of the ramparts is a remarkable detail: sunrises and sunsets along their axes indicate the dates of the equinoxes, solstices and Celtic festivals. This creates a cultural and historical landscape site where not only the visible earthworks but also their alignment plays a role.

The Markvartické lime trees were added to the heritage register in 1996 and were planted along the wall at the beginning of the 18th century, at the same time as the church was built. Visitors to Markvartice can see particularly clearly in this example the connection between the villagescape, architectural history and the evolved landscape. The Markvartice reconciliation cross is also described as the oldest known cross in the Český ráj.

Concerts, Flowers and Trails

Since 2009, the Church of St. Giles has hosted concerts such as “Hudba z ráje”, “Noc kostelů” and an Advent concert, as well as other cultural events. These events support the preservation of the church and give the historic building a cultural presence alongside its architectural history. Another recurring tradition is the annual “Česká květnice” event organized by Planta naturalis. You can visit the cultivation areas independently or as part of guided tours; an exhibition of arranged meadow flowers is also regularly included.

A green-marked hiking trail runs through Markvartice from Sobotka towards Staré Hrady and Libáň.
