Kněžnice combines experiences in nature with a tangible history of village culture. Those looking for more than just a single sightseeing spot during their stay will find a range of themes here: hiking, geological features, expansive landscapes and monuments right in the village. This makes it possible for families with different interests to discover a destination that combines observing nature with learning about history.

Landscape and geological features

The cadastral area of Kněžnice extends into the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area. The Cidlinský hřeben Nature Monument lies north of Kněžnice. This important geological site belongs to the Český ráj UNESCO Global Geopark and is also a protected forest complex. Its special features include a rich herbaceous understory and the largest population of wood ants in the Podkrkonoší region. The area therefore offers not only beautiful landscapes but also specific natural-history topics for curious visitors.

Another geological feature is the Kozlov site. It can be reached from the road via a walkable tourist trail. Three lava flows can be observed on site. Cavities in these lava flows contain chalcedony, agates and, in particular, quartz geodes and colorful quartz varieties, with amethyst predominating. For an excursion focused on rocks, this is a distinctly different experience from a simple viewpoint.

Hiking and views across Český ráj

Kněžnice is a good starting point for hikes. To the west, there are expansive views across large parts of Český ráj, with Trosky Castle standing out as a distinctive landmark in the landscape. This creates two different options for planning the day: you can explore the surroundings on foot or focus on the landscape and its characteristic forms. This choice is particularly interesting for families when not all travelers prefer the same pace or the same subjects.

Local history and monuments

The first written mention of Kněžnice dates from 1376 and appears in the court book of the city of Jičín. The history of the village is also reflected in several monuments of local significance. These include the statue of the Virgin Mary and the wayside shrines known as “Boží Muka.”

The history can be seen especially clearly in the crucifix on a pedestal. It stands on the main road through Kněžnice, near the municipal office, and is a valuable early Neoclassical stone sculpture from 1801. It was created by a local stonemason who did not sign his work. Its location by the road makes the crucifix a tangible example of the village’s historical character, rooted in the local streetscape.

Another testament to rural development is the farm complex at Kněžnice No. 66. It is a large agricultural farm complex with a three-sided courtyard. It was extensively remodeled in the late 19th century and illustrates a form of agricultural farm-complex development following the abolition of Robot, the historical system of compulsory labor. The farm complex thus complements the religious monuments with an example from everyday peasant life and architectural history.
