Discover Vidice: Churches, Chateau Grounds and Landscapes
Churches, Chateau Grounds and Spa History
Vidice combines sacred history, chateau architecture and protected landscapes with several opportunities for active days. The protected church grounds of Saint Nicholas comprise the church, the bell tower, the enclosing wall with its gate and the associated properties. The Church of Saint Nicholas, with its bell tower and cemetery, is Vidice’s landmark; it was already standing at the beginning of the 14th century. A centuries-old memorial lime tree stands beside it.
Another cultural focal point is Roztěž. The hunting lodge was built in 1669. Roztěž Chateau was remodelled in 1909–1911 according to plans by the architect Leopold Bauer in the Viennese Secession Classicism style. The chateau grounds include a chapel, a terrace with sculptures, a grotto, a terraced garden and a chateau park. The former spa grounds in Roztěž also include a stone well and three barrel-vaulted bridges.
Lázně also leads to traces of history. The Chapel of Our Lady of Help is an Empire-style building dating from 1817–1820. The grounds of Lázeňský dům with its chapel include a terrace, a covered entrance to the spring, former spa buildings and a former forester’s lodge. The former spa facilities in Lázně were a destination for visitors from Kutná Hora. This former function remains important when classifying the site.
Nature and Unusual Discoveries
East of the road towards Mezholezy–Vidice–Košice, the area belongs to the “Údolí Bylanky a Vrchlice” Nature Park. The nature park protects wooded and partly rocky valleys cut through by streams, as well as xerothermic, meaning warmth-loving, communities on Cretaceous sediments. Thus, alongside the buildings, a clearly defined landscape is also protected.
Near Nová Lhota are sandstone quarries in trackless terrain, more than 250 m from the road. One of the quarries is known for the discovery of a dinosaur skeleton from the Iguanodontidae family. The combination of geological distinction and palaeontological history adds a distinctive element alongside the churches, chateaus and former spa facilities.
Golf, Sports and Cycling
For active days, Casa Serena in Roztěž 1, Vidice, offers an 18-hole golf course with a par of 71 and a length of 6,364 m. The VSH multifunctional sports field in Roztěž can be used for tennis, volleyball, nohejbal, handball and football. The CKH14 “Do Uhlířských Janovic” cycle route also passes through Vidice. It is 53.6 km long, with a possible deviation of ±5%. The route length provides a specific framework when planning a cycling tour.
When choosing accommodation, you can first consider which focus should define your stay: sacred and aristocratic architecture, the protected valleys, the former spa history, or sports and cycling.
