Svojšice: Castle History and Pond Landscape
Accommodation in Svojšice
Svojšice combines a layered architectural history with a distinctive pond landscape. The castle stands on the site of a Gothic fortress belonging to the Lords of Svojšice; the church, chapel and statues tell stories from later centuries. When choosing your accommodation, consider whether you want to focus mainly on the town’s cultural history or also include Svojšický rybník in your trip.
Castle and Churches from Several Periods
Zámek Svojšice is a Baroque-Classical castle and is protected as a cultural monument. The site of the Gothic fortress belonging to the Lords of Svojšice recalls its earlier history. Baroque farm buildings with a brewery adjoin the castle. These different structures make the site interesting for travelers who want to explore historic complexes beyond a single period.
The design of the grounds also contributes to the setting: a landscaped park covering 10 ha adjoins the castle. Nearby, remnants of a Baroque French garden with a regular layout are still visible. The park and garden thus add another historical layer to the castle landscape. This description of the grounds does not indicate whether they are currently accessible.
St. Wenceslas Parish Church has been documented in written sources since 1352 and has Gothic origins. Parts of the original church building have been preserved in the masonry of the present structure. In 1678, Count Michael Oswald von Thun had the medieval predecessor church remodeled in the Baroque style. The building’s history shows how older Gothic fabric and a later Baroque redesign come together in one building.
Other historical traces span several periods: the Baroque statue of St. John of Nepomuk dates from 1714 and is one of the oldest statues of this saint in the Kolín region. An Early Baroque statue of St. Wenceslas on a pillar dates from 1694; the Baroque St. Wenceslas niche chapel was built in 1773. These individual religious works of art also help place the town’s history in time.
A painting adds to this story: Václav Prokop Kramolín’s “Apoteózy sv. Václava,” from 1773, was originally displayed on the main altar of the local church and is now part of the collection of the Regionální muzeum Kolín. Another chapter is June 20, 1757: on that day, the victorious Habsburg army gathered in the fields near Svojšice for a victory celebration featuring the Ambrosian hymn of praise, the Te Deum, and a triple salute fired from cannons.
Svojšický rybník as a Landscape Landmark
Svojšický rybník is one of the municipality’s major landscape features. Four branches of the local system of ecological stability meet at the pond and the Voděradský potok; a local biocenter is also located by the pond. The landscape thus complements a trip whose cultural side is shaped by the castle, church and historic works of art. The pond’s ecological importance offers a distinct perspective on the area; it does not guarantee that particular animals can be observed.
