Křečovice between Josef Suk and Film History

Křečovice combines the memory of Josef Suk with a church of unusual design, the filming history of “Vesničko má, středisková” and routes in the surrounding area. Visitors to the town can combine cultural impressions with a section by bicycle. In this way, music history, sacred architecture, film and landscape stand alongside one another as different focal points for a stay.

In the Footsteps of Josef Suk

The Josef Suk Memorial is located in the house where Josef Suk spent a significant part of his life. A second location is Josef Suk’s birthplace room. It is located in the Josef Suk Primary School and Kindergarten in Křečovice and is accessible exclusively through the cemetery. Visits to Josef Suk’s birthplace room must be arranged with the Křečovice Municipal Office. The birthplace room is open on the last Sunday in May, when a memorial concert for Josef Suk takes place in the Church of Saint Luke. This makes it possible to explore the composer’s life at two different locations and on a designated annual occasion.

A Church with Distinctive Details

The Church of Saint Luke is a single-nave building with an irregular floor plan and a massive, eccentrically positioned north tower. It has a Renaissance high altar with a canvas painting created in 1840. Beside a side entrance to the Church of Saint Luke, a sculpture described as a “pagan god” is set into the exterior plaster. Those viewing the church building therefore encounter not only a distinctive basic form, but also a historic altar and a striking detail on the exterior wall. The building’s form and furnishings offer different ways of approaching the history of the town.

Sukova alej and Film History

Sukova alej runs along the northeastern edge of Křečovice, parallel to the road to Strážovice. Along Sukova alej are stones set into the ground with the names of Josef Suk’s works carved into them. The film “Vesničko má, středisková” provides a different cultural accent: it was filmed in Křečovice in 1984 and 1985. Those interested in film can therefore discover Křečovice from a different perspective than through its musical history.

Cycling Loop Route and Protected Area

For cycling plans, the cycling loop route to the Drahoušek Lookout Tower between Vlkonice and Osečany passes through Křečovice. The Křečovický potok protected area can be reached via the red-marked trail from Křečovice to Osečany. The route and the trail thus lead to different destinations: the lookout tower in one case and a protected area in the other. If you are travelling with different interests, you can include these options separately from the cultural destinations in your further planning. A stay can thus be divided between local history, film and active exploration of the surrounding area.

Compare Other Places

For your further travel planning, you can compare not only Křečovice but also Hradiště, Rataje, Drachkov, Bucina, Bukovany, Rabyne, Pavlovice and Trhový Štěpánov.
