The cadastral area of Ctiměřice is part of Chlum Nature Park. When planning a trip, two levels are important: forests and hillside communities describe the nature park as a whole, while marked cycling routes are located near the village. Those interested in nature and cycling can thus distinguish Chlum’s ecological setting from specific points of reference in the surrounding area.

Chlum Nature Park: forests and open slopes

Chlum Nature Park includes Central European oak-hornbeam forests. Species-rich beech forests grow on the northern slopes. Also found here are warmth-loving grass and herb communities of the Bromion alliance, which grow on moderately to steeply sloping, sunny marl slopes and are known as “white slopes.” To clarify the terminology: “species-rich” emphasizes the diversity within the beech forests; “warmth-loving” characterizes the grass and herb communities by their association with warm locations. Bromion is an alliance of such plant communities, not the name of a single species. The terms therefore refer to different ecological characteristics, while oak-hornbeam and beech forest describe forest types by their tree species. This distinction makes the botanical description of Chlum Nature Park easier to understand.

The locations distinguish the habitats described: beech forests are associated with the northern slopes, while Bromion communities are found on sunny marl slopes. The park’s natural profile thus extends from forest communities to open hillside habitats. On the “white slopes,” the gradient and sunny aspect are part of the landscape, as are the grass and herb communities growing there.

Wildlife is also part of this natural profile. The entire forest complex of the nature park is an important refuge for forest vertebrates and surviving communities of small invertebrates in Chlum. This adds a second perspective to the vegetation information: the forests are characterized not only by their tree species, but also by their importance for animal groups. Together with the open hillside communities, Chlum’s natural environment encompasses diverse habitats and ecological functions.
