Chářovice Between Landscape and Memory

Chářovice combines a quiet rural setting with distinctive natural and cultural features. Around the village, you will find fields, forests, shallow valleys and ponds; at the same time, the bell tower, war memorial and chapel tell of different chapters in the village’s history. If you are planning a trip to the Czech Republic and want to choose a place with walks, landscapes and specific historical points of reference, Chářovice offers several clearly distinct points of interest.

A Place with a Turbulent History

During the Second World War, Chářovice became part of the Waffen-SS Benešov military training area. The residents of Chářovice had to leave their homes on 1 April 1943. This turning point adds the history of the population to the visible cultural monuments. Chářovice can therefore be understood not only through its landscape, but also through a specific historical event.

Fields, Forests, Ponds and a Watercourse

The landscape around Chářovice comprises a varied mix of fields, forests, shallow valleys and ponds. The Chářovický Stream rises about 300 metres south of Chářovice. Significant ornithological observations have been made at Velký Chlebský Pond in the Chářovice area, including sightings of specially protected animal species.

Cultural Monuments in the Village Landscape

A stone bell tower stands in the park in Chářovice. The war memorial in Chářovice commemorates the soldiers who fell in the First World War, as well as the local police constable Jaroslav Piát, who died on 5 May 1945 during the liberation of Prague. The Chapel of St John in Chářovice is one of the culturally significant monuments of regional and local importance in the village. These different cultural points of reference give you several ways to include Chářovice in your travel plans if you want to discover local history not only through major sights, but also through memorial sites and smaller buildings.
