Křekov lies in the valley of the Křekovský potok stream, at the northern foot of the 642-metre-high Vysoká mountain and on the edge of the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. The village’s defining features include memorial sites in the village, as well as chapels and a natural monument in the surrounding area. The place can therefore be explored through its specific connections to the landscape and a history made visible at several locations.

Landscape and Nature Around Křekov

The three location references complement one another but describe different scales: the stream locates the valley, the northern foot situates Křekov in relation to the mountain, and the edge of the protected area links it to the wider landscape. The picture thus extends from the immediate valley to the broader landscape.

The nearby Podskaličí Natural Monument is a valley meadow whose character has been largely shaped by human use. This adds a specific habitat in the surrounding area to the broader landscape context. Human use is explicitly part of the described character of this meadow; here, the natural environment also appears as a shaped landscape.

The municipality describes a rich population of white-flowered crocus (Crocus albiflorus) at nearby Podskaličí. Podskaličí is one of two areas designated in Valašskokloboucko to protect this species; the other is the Smolinka Natural Monument. Alongside the landscape as a whole, this highlights a clearly identified species-protection issue.

Memorial Sites and Chapels

A monument to the victims of the fascist occupation stands in Křekov. Marie and Josef Kolařík died at the Mauthausen concentration camp on 24 October 1942. The village square is also home to a locally significant sandstone cross dating from 1906, which has been restored. The occupation memorial and the village square cross offer different ways to engage with local history: one commemorates the victims of the occupation, while the other is a locally significant stone monument.

The nearby Hložecká Chapel commemorates the Tatar invasion of 1663 and the Kuruc Wars of 1704–1711. The Chapel of Panny Marie – Královny míru stands on Hložec Hill, two kilometres from Křekov; it was completed in 1953 on the site of an older Baroque chapel. The dates have different roles: 1663 and 1704–1711 refer to events commemorated, while 1953 marks the completion of a building. Panny Marie – Královny míru means “Mary, Queen of Peace.” The name sets a different emphasis from that of the Hložecká Chapel: there, the focus is on the commemorated Tatar invasion and the Kuruc Wars; here, the invocation of Mary is part of the chapel’s very name.
