Discover Pošná: Churches, Chapels and Railway Viaduct
Accommodation in Pošná
Pošná is best explored through its historic buildings: medieval church architecture, village chapels, a stone wayside shrine, and traces of railway and farm history. Anyone looking for a place to stay with a distinct cultural-history theme will find a variety of forms of rural architecture here. The buildings range from religious sites to a viaduct and a historic farmstead.
Church of St. Bartholomew (Kostel sv. Bartoloměje)
In the western part of Pošná, the Church of St. Bartholomew (Kostel sv. Bartoloměje) stands on a hill overlooking the Návesní rybník pond. It dates from the second half of the 13th century and is a largely preserved, single-nave late Romanesque building. It was substantially altered during the Renaissance and Baroque periods; in 1680 it was remodelled in the Baroque style. Inside are valuable 14th-century Gothic wall paintings. Thus, the building history of this single church spans several centuries. The cemetery grounds are partly enclosed by a boundary wall.
For architecture enthusiasts, the appeal lies in the interplay of different periods: the single-nave structure, its later alterations and the Gothic paintings each reveal a different aspect of local history. The church is not in the town centre but on the hill in the western part of Pošná.
Chapels, Cross and Wayside Shrine
A small, rustic masonry chapel from the 19th century stands on the village green. Its square floor plan has slightly chamfered corners, above which rises a tented roof topped by a four-sided lantern. A stone memorial crucifix dating from 1884 stands in a prominent position in front of the entrance. The village chapel and the stone cross erected in front of it, with its cast-iron corpus of Christ, form the Kaple s křížem ensemble.
Another architectural feature awaits on the eastern edge of Pošná: a stone wayside shrine in a late Gothic style stands beside the road to Zahrádka. The year 1609 is carved into it. The chapel and the wayside shrine show how varied small religious buildings can be: one is a masonry structure with a tented roof and lantern, while the other is a stone wayside shrine with a clearly marked date.
Viaduct, Farmstead and Château
The monumental railway viaduct near Pošná was built around 1888 on the Horní Cerekev–Tábor railway line. In a gentle curve, it crosses the deep valley of the Novodvorský potok stream. Eleven arches rest on four-sided conical piers; the structure is built of rubble stone. The valley, arches and masonry make its construction as an engineering structure particularly easy to appreciate. Thus, alongside religious and village architecture, the townscape also features railway history.
Rural building history is also represented by a closed farmstead with masonry agricultural buildings and a timber-frame dwelling house with a three-part floor plan. It is exceptionally well preserved and is considered a valuable record of the development of rural buildings in the 19th century. The farmstead complements the individual chapels and the viaduct with the scale of a historic farm.
In the village of Proseč stands an 18th-century Baroque château, originally built as a Renaissance fortress with two side rondels. The building now serves as a care home. The château in Pošná is surrounded by a landscaped park designed to blend with nature and enclosed by a picket fence with pillars. When considering the building, its historic appearance and present-day use are equally relevant.
Pošná as a Place to Stay
If you also take your interests during your stay into account when choosing accommodation, Pošná offers a clear thematic focus: church art, small village buildings, rural architecture and a historic railway viaduct. These varied structures make Pošná worth considering as a destination for travellers interested in cultural history beyond the grand buildings of major cities. The sights range from details such as the lantern on a village chapel to the construction of a viaduct spanning a deep valley.
