Střelské Hoštice: Museum, St. Martin’s Church and Kněží hora
Accommodation in Střelské Hoštice
Střelské Hoštice combines cultural history with opportunities to get active. The south wing of the chateau houses a museum dedicated to the Otava River and rafting, as well as a gallery; St. Martin’s Church stands on the southern edge of the village. Nearby is Kněží hora, a nature reserve with the remains of a Slavic hillfort. This gives you different options when planning your visit: you can focus on the museum and architectural history, or include the nature trail and sporting activities.
Cultural history in the chateau wing and at St. Martin’s Church
The ground floor of the chateau’s south wing houses the Museum of the Otava River and Rafting, along with a gallery. It is open from June 3 to September 30, according to the current opening hours. If the museum is a key reason for your trip, plan your visit within this seasonal period and check the opening hours for the day you intend to go.
St. Martin’s Church adds an architectural highlight. It has a single nave, faces east and stands on the southern edge of the village; the tower is on the west facade. The church was built in 1822 in the Neoclassical style, after the previous Gothic church burned down in 1819. Its valuable interior includes architectural features such as the vaults, roof structure, gallery and pillars. Its eastward orientation and western tower make the building’s layout easy to understand.
Kněží hora: nature, archaeology and activity
Kněží hora is located near Střelské Hoštice. The nature reserve includes the remains of a Slavic hillfort, designated an archaeological monument. The site therefore brings together landscape and history, though each offers a different experience.
The Kněží hora nature trail is about 4 km long, intended for walkers and cyclists, and runs in the direction of Katovice–Kněží hora (Střelské Hoštice). Five stops with information panels divide up the route. Its approximate length and the stops provide useful points of reference for planning; check the signage and conditions on site.
Another way to get active is the multipurpose sports court with a synthetic surface. It offers tennis, volleyball, nohejbal and basketball. If you plan to play one of these sports, check the current reservation arrangements before using the court, as they may change. The options are distinct: the nature trail is intended for a route on foot or by bike, while the court accommodates several sports.
Getting there and choosing where to stay
Střelské Hoštice railway station is on route 191, on the Plzeň–Strakonice–České Budějovice line, and is part of an integrated transport system. If you are travelling by train, check the connections and timetables for your travel date, as services and times may change. When choosing accommodation in Střelské Hoštice, you can weigh up the museum, church architecture and outdoor activities. The museum’s seasonal opening period is a different planning consideration from the nature trail, which is intended for walkers and cyclists.
