Nové Domky on Lipno Reservoir – Cycling Routes, Nature and Settlement History
Nové Domky lies on the right bank of Lipno Reservoir and combines a distinctive waterside location with cycling routes, a blue-marked hiking trail, areas of significant conservation value and a complex settlement history. If, during your stay at Lipno Reservoir, you would like to combine nature, active excursions and historical traces, you will find several clearly distinguishable points of interest here.
Waterside Location and Valuable Natural Areas
The regional biocorridor RBK 3054 Čertovo kopyto–Předmostí runs through the Nové Domky locality. From a conservation perspective, the locality is considered one of the valuable areas. The extensive regional biocentre RBC 557 Čertovo kopyto has also been designated nearby. The municipality of Loučovice is home to the Čertova stěna–Luč National Nature Reserve, with a unique sea of rocks and the romantic valley of the Vltava. Together with the waterside location, this creates a spatial connection between the waterscape, designated natural areas and the nature reserve within the municipality of Loučovice.
Cycling at Lipno Reservoir
After crossing the Lipno Reservoir dam, the ROAD 4 – Kolem Lipna road cycling route passes through Nové Domky. ROAD 5 – Do Krumlova is also relevant when choosing a route: its first section is identical to ROAD 4 and therefore also includes the section through Nové Domky. Anyone comparing the two routes should take their shared beginning through the locality into account. At this point, both road cycling routes therefore follow the same section along Lipno Reservoir.
Čertovo kopyto as a Hiking Destination
Čertovo kopyto can be reached from the car park at the Lipno Reservoir dam via a blue-marked hiking trail. The rock formation is a remarkable yet little-known place in the surroundings of Lipno Reservoir. Its name derives from a boulder that closely resembles a hoof. The car park, marked trail and unusual rock shape provide this destination with a clear framework for planning your excursion. The starting point at the dam, the blue trail marking and the unusual rock shape form three specific points of reference.
The History of Nové Domky
The historic settlement of Nové Domky consisted predominantly of smallholders’ homesteads. The historical name Neuhäusel was first used for Nové Domky in 1710. Lippnerschwebe (Lipenský zdvih), a former loggers’ meadow with a nearby terminus of the same name, formed a separate historical part of the settlement. The place name thus contains several layers of time: Neuhäusel refers to the designation used in 1710, while Lippnerschwebe recalls the former loggers’ meadow and terminus.
After the original population was expelled after the war, Nové Domky was partially resettled. However, the construction of Lipno Reservoir and the subsequent establishment of the border zone led to the almost complete end of permanent settlement. The former historic locality on the right bank of the original settlement is now completely flooded by the waters of Lipno Reservoir.
