Dasný – Village Green, Chapel and Landscape
Accommodation in Kronfellern
Dasný is centered around a long, tree-lined village green, with the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk standing at its center. Historic farmhouses and a history in which the village was once divided give the square a distinctive character. Nearby are Bezdrev Pond and the Vrbenské rybníky protected area; a named cycling circuit passes through Dasný. Local history, water and nature thus come together in different ways.
Village Green, Chapel and Farmhouses
The central village green in Dasný is long, mostly grassy and planted with trees. The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in its center. Three farmhouses on the green feature design elements in the folk Baroque style. Historic farmsteads on the village green have also preserved a high historical and architectural standard. The chapel and farmhouses create distinct focal points: a religious building and rural architecture sharing the village center.
Two Estates and a Historic Road
The chapel was built between 1869 and 1870 in the Pseudo-Romanesque style. The residents of Dasný financed it together, and it was consecrated on June 6, 1870. The construction period and consecration date mark two different stages in its history: the period indicates when it was built, while the specific June date records its consecration.
The village’s former political affiliations can also be clearly distinguished by time and place. During the last two centuries before serfdom was abolished, Dasný was divided into two halves: the northern part belonged to the Hluboká estate, and the southern part to the royal city of České Budějovice. An imperial road to Vodňany, built in the 1820s, crossed the village green diagonally. It adds a historic transport route to the story of the green.
Bezdrev and Vrbenské rybníky: Water and Nature
North of Dasný, nearby, lies Bezdrev Pond, covering 520 hectares. It is used for swimming and water sports, especially sailing and windsurfing. Bezdrev is therefore not only a body of water in the landscape, but also a place for specific activities on the water.
The Vrbenské rybníky protected area overlaps with the cadastral territory of Dasný. It encompasses ecologically valuable aquatic, wetland, meadow and forest ecosystems, as well as rare and protected plant and animal species. These include the highly endangered fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) and hermit beetle (Osmoderma eremita). Bezdrev and the protected area thus represent different interests: water sports on the one hand, and diverse ecosystems and protected species on the other.
Views of Castles and Churches, Cycling in Dasný
From Dasný, there are panoramic views of Hluboká nad Vltavou Castle. The surrounding area also offers views of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Hosín. These sightlines add other prominent landmarks in the landscape to the historic village green.
The 50 km Velký okruh Blaty cycling circuit passes through Dasný, following the route between Češňovice and České Budějovice. From Dasný, you can turn right beyond the village and ride along a pond to České Budějovice on a very poor farm and forest track. The two options call for different planning considerations: the circuit is listed as 50 km long, while the poor surface is the key point to note for the ride to České Budějovice. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
