Discover Zwickau (Zvíkov)
Accommodation in Zwickau
Zwickau (Zvíkov) combines local history with the rural landscape of Poluška Nature Park. A historic chapel, a railway watchman's house from the early days of the railway and a winter lime tree designated as a natural monument provide specific points of interest in the village. At the same time, Zvíkov is one of the settlements in the nature park, whose landscape extends beyond the village itself.
History of Zvíkov and the railway
The first written mention of Zvíkov dates back to 1371. A railway section associated with the municipality of Zvíkov and the Chodeč-Zvíkov cadastral area was built in 1825–1826. This means the early written mention and the railway section are several centuries apart.
Watchman's house No. 18 in Chodeč-Zvíkov was built between 1826 and 1832. It served as the home and workplace of the watchman entrusted with the adjacent railway section. The construction periods of the railway section and the watchman's house overlap in 1826. Two historical layers can therefore be distinguished: the early written mention and the later history of the railway section and its watchman's house.
Boundary stones in varying states of preservation remain along the section. The watchman's house represents its former residential and service function; the boundary stones add to the picture, with their differing states of preservation.
Another cultural reference is the traditional raising of the maypole. A cultural event associated with this tradition was held in Zvíkov on 30 April 2013. If you would like to plan a stay specifically around this custom, check current event dates before making plans.
Chapel and winter lime tree
The “Kaplička ve Zvíkově” chapel is located in the Chodeč-Zvíkov cadastral area; the nearest settlement is Zvíkov. The historic chapel is also the only chapel in the entire Chodeč-Zvíkov cadastral area, making it a clear point of cultural and historical interest in the village.
A winter lime tree with a split trunk, designated as a natural monument, stands on the village green in Zvíkov, near the chapel. Their proximity brings together two distinct local features: historic architecture and a striking tree.
The Poluška landscape
Zvíkov is one of the settlements in Poluška Nature Park. Across the wider area, the landscape is shaped by nearly untouched forest ecosystems, meadows, grassy field margins, groups of trees and preserved traditional rural architecture. The difference between these features and the chapel and watchman's house is one of scale: the buildings are specific features of the village, while Poluška describes a broader natural and cultural landscape.
