Prague: Discover Culture, History and Urban Greenery
Accommodation in Prague
Prague between World Heritage and Greenways
If you are looking for a city to explore with your family where history, distinctive buildings and relaxing routes come together, Prague offers many different ways to discover it. The historic centre preserves its overall medieval urban structure, its fabric and its spatial composition. The cityscape also features architectural works of the Gothic period from the 14th and 15th centuries, the High Baroque period from the first half of the 18th century and the emerging Modernist movement after 1900.
Historic Places with a History of Their Own
Prague Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The extensive complex consists of palaces and religious buildings in various architectural styles, including Romanesque remains from the 10th century and Gothic alterations from the 14th century. It was probably founded around 880 by Prince Bořivoj of the Přemyslid dynasty. Today, Prague Castle offers the public tours of historic buildings and exhibitions, concerts and guided tours.
The exhibition “The Story of Prague Castle” tells the thousand-year history of the place where Czech statehood took shape. It combines original objects from the collections of Prague Castle with stories about people who worked there and an interactive programme. This allows you to discover the castle complex not only through its architecture, but also through its historical content.
Charles Bridge is a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It was established in 1357 and completed in 1402; thirty statues and sculptural groups of saints guard the bridge. Old Town Square has served as a marketplace since the 10th century, with markets featuring various goods held regularly and annually. Since 1410, the oldest still-functioning astronomical clock in the world has measured time on the tower of the Old Town Hall.
The House at the Stone Bell is used by the Prague City Gallery to hold exhibitions and concerts. It thus complements the major historic venues with a place where you can discover contemporary cultural offerings within the historic cityscape.
Urban Greenery, Playgrounds and Paths
Stromovka forms a large green oasis in the middle of the city. Mature trees, water and lawns, opportunities for picnics, and options for walking and relaxing create a clear contrast to the stone buildings of the historic centre. Numerous playgrounds and a network of routes and paths for recreation also make the park a destination in its own right for families with children.
Prague on Foot, by Bike or Along Pilgrimage Routes
The Štvanická pedestrian bridge is also known as Lávka HolKa and is intended for pedestrians and cyclists. If you would like to explore Prague along routes through the city, it is therefore one of the documented options for walking and cycling. The Všerubská and Železná pilgrimage routes begin in Prague at the Church of St James in the Old Town.
