Accommodation in Pohorsko
Nature and History in Pohorsko
Pohorsko combines a distinctive landscape with tangible, clearly visible traces of its history. The village lies on the northern slope of Královský kámen, which reaches 1,058 m above sea level, and Ždánov, at 1,065 m. At the same time, Pohorsko preserves memories of a long settlement history, a chapel from more recent times, and signs of former village life. When choosing accommodation in Pohorsko, these different facets can help you better understand the character of the destination and identify your preferred excursions.
The Pohorsko Protected Area
A particular focus is the Pohorsko protected area. It was first designated on 14 February 2012 and protects the endangered Czech subspecies of the early-flowering spring gentian, Gentianella praecox subsp. bohemica. The protected area includes meadows approximately 200 to 500 m south of Pohorsko, below the road leading from the village to a forestry lodge. This distance indication is intentionally to be understood as an approximate range.
The location also shapes the character of the landscape. From Pohorsko, there is a beautiful view to the north; on the opposite side rises the ridge of the Javornická hornatina. Thus, specific natural features stand side by side in the village: the protected meadows to the south, the two mountains on the northern slope, and the view toward the mountain landscape on the opposite side. For your travel planning, this provides clear orientation if nature and the landscape are to define your stay.
Chapel, Pilgrimage, and Local History
One of the most distinctive cultural traces is the Chapel of St. Prokop. It was consecrated in July 2001. It is also associated with the first pilgrimage in Pohorsko, which took place on 4 July. The village’s first written mention dates back much further: Pohorsko was first mentioned in writing in 1413. The chapel and the early written reference to the village thus represent two different layers of history that can be connected while exploring the area.
There is also a monument to the victims of the First World War at a side-road junction. Another historical trace can be found at the former U Blahoutů inn. The inscription “V ráji šumavském” can still be read there today.
Guidance When Choosing a Location
For getting there and choosing accommodation, the transport situation is an important practical consideration: public transport does not run as far as Pohorsko. The roads from Strašín and Nezdice end in Pohorsko.
Pohorsko is therefore a destination where you can consider nature, local history, and visible reminders of earlier times together. Depending on what you want to focus on, the key points of interest lead to the protected meadows and mountain views, the Chapel of St. Prokop, or the historical signs in the village landscape.
