Předslav amid churches, fortress traces and a cycling route

Předslav is a destination for travelers who want to combine historical evidence with active exploration. The municipality brings together a protected church, the history of a former fortress, a Baroque chapel, a distinctive family tomb and an approximately 42 km cycling tour. For you, this means a trip whose highlights can combine cultural history and outdoor activity, without reducing Předslav to just one attraction.

Church of St. James the Greater and a famous name

The Church of St. James the Greater is listed as a protected monument. Its oldest written mention dates from 1325. František Palacký provides a notable connection to Czech cultural history: he married in this church in 1827. The place is therefore connected not only with a religious building, but also with a specific biographical episode from the history of Bohemia.

Another religious landmark is the Chapel of St. Apolena. It is a simply designed Baroque chapel dating from 1726. Together with the church, it opens up different historical perspectives: the church reaches back to the Middle Ages in its written records, while the chapel represents a clearly identifiable Baroque design. On a culturally oriented trip, you can therefore regard these two buildings as separate stops.

Tvrz fortress: from a medieval defensive structure to a small chateau

The Tvrz fortress in Předslav is first mentioned in 1483. It was probably built as a water castle as early as the 14th century. Its character later changed: during the Renaissance, the fortress was converted into a small chateau, followed by a Baroque extension in the mid-18th century. This sequence makes Tvrz a place where several periods of construction and use can be traced through a single name.

The Sokolovna also preserves an older layer of the locality. It stands on the remains of a former local fortress and was ceremonially opened on January 29, 1923. Today it is used for various sports and cultural events. Thus, in Předslav, traces of a historic fortress stand alongside a building that remains connected to the public life of the locality. This does not automatically guarantee a current event or use; what is documented, however, is its present-day use for sports and culture.

The Měchura family tomb

The Měchura family tomb is located along the northern boundary wall of the cemetery. Around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, it was moved here from a disused cemetery chapel. The tomb is also the final resting place of the composer Leopold Eugen Měchura. This site complements the larger buildings with a quieter historical detail and shows how the history of a locality can also be explored through families, memorial sites and individual personalities.

Předslav as a stop on a cycling tour

Those who want to combine cultural discoveries with cycling can include Předslav on the approximately 42 km “Z Klatov za romantikou do Žinkov” tour. The route leads from Měčín via Předslav to Točník.

If you would like to extend your search beyond Předslav, you will also find Velký Bor, Nehodiv, Hejná, Šimanov, Rejštejn, Ujčín, Vrhaveč and Křenice.
