Hamry Na Šumavě combines a four-kilometre nature trail through the Úhlava River floodplain with a cycling route that runs directly through the village. The footpath explores natural areas along both banks; nearby Bílá strž adds a waterfall in the Bohemian Forest to the nature experience. Whether you explore the floodplain on foot or see Hamry as part of a cycling and hiking tour, the different routes give your stay a distinct focus.

On foot through the Úhlava floodplain

The nature trail through the Úhlava floodplain is for pedestrians only. Four boardwalks cross wetlands, making these landscape features a defining part of the route. Along the path, you can also see beaver works and habitats with numerous protected plants and animals. Conditions in wetlands, as well as local flora and fauna, may change with the seasons.

The trail begins at Kollerův dvůr in Hamry, beside a tourist shelter with an entrance sign and map. Five information stops cover the upper course of the Úhlava, its length, sources and hydrology. Other topics include the natural development of forests on abandoned, formerly cultivated land, settlement in the area and changes to the landscape. In this way, the route connects floodplain and forest habitats with the history of how people have used and shaped the area.

Bílá strž: Waterfall and viewpoint

Near Hamry is Bílá strž, the highest waterfall in the Bohemian Forest. It lies in the valley of the Bílý potok at an elevation of 940 metres; its drop is seven metres. There is a viewing terrace at Bílá strž, with views of the surrounding natural landscape. Check the condition of the terrace on site before your visit.

From Hamry–Hojsova Stráž railway station, a blue-marked hiking route runs six kilometres through Hamry to the Pod Statečekem trail junction. From there, a yellow-marked route continues for 1.3 kilometres to Bílá strž. These two distances help you navigate from the starting point to the turnoff for the waterfall. As trail markings may change, check them before setting out.

Cycling and seasonal trails

Cycling Route 33, the Šumavská magistrála, runs directly through Hamry. It connects the Úhlava ecological region with the Šumava-západ microregion and continues through the southern Bohemian Forest. Two long-distance cycling routes pass through Hamry in total; Route 33 is the connection described in more detail here. This offers a local footpath through the floodplain alongside a cycling route with a regional course, catering to different types of tour.

Bílá strž is also accessible by bicycle from Hamry or Špičák; check current trail conditions in advance. In winter, cross-country ski trails run around the gorge. Whether they are usable depends on snow conditions and current maintenance. A beech tree around 250 years old is also located near Hamry.
