Gothic windows, a Baroque altar with an unusual depiction of St. George, and an Art Nouveau ossuary: Pomezí offers several tangible ways to explore its local history. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary, the settlement pattern and a signposted regional cycling route also shape its character. This lets you include cultural discoveries and a rural atmosphere in your travel plans.

St. George’s Church and Its Art Treasures

St. George’s Church in Pomezí preserves Gothic architectural features, including a prismatic entrance tower and narrow Gothic windows. The interior is Baroque in style, with a particularly strong Rococo influence. The Baroque altar features an unusual depiction of St. George. A bell dating from 1511 hangs in the tower; stone statues of angels dating from 1870 stand at the cemetery entrance. The church is a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

A church in Pomezí was already mentioned in 1349 in connection with the establishment of the Diocese of Litomyšl. It was probably built in the Gothic style at around the same time. This early mention adds historical context to the later artistic and architectural details evident in the church and its surroundings.

The Ossuary and the Chapel of the Virgin Mary

The grounds of St. George’s Church include a 19th-century ossuary in the Art Nouveau style. It is built into the southern cemetery wall, and its interior is decorated with ornamental paintings. The ossuary was extensively renovated in 2006–2007 with financial support from the Pardubice Region. It is included in the list of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. Its setting in the cemetery wall, Art Nouveau style and painted interior give the building a character of its own.

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary also has a clearly documented history: it was damaged in a fire in August 1924, repaired in the 1930s and consecrated on September 12, 1937. Together with the church’s earlier history, this sequence shows that the history of the village is not limited to a single period of construction.

Village Character and Cycling

Pomezí has the forest-strip village settlement pattern typical of the Vysočina region. Detached farmsteads lie on both sides of a stream valley and the road. The arrangement of the farmsteads is therefore just as much a part of the village’s character as its historic religious buildings. The Bílý potok rises above Pomezí and feeds two ponds. These details offer another perspective on the village: in addition to its architectural history and fittings, the valley, stream and scattered farmsteads also shape the description of its landscape.

For cycle tourists, the signposted regional road cycling route 4023 is a specific point of reference. It runs through Balda, Pomezí, Květná and Čistá. This sequence of place names situates Pomezí on a regional route, offering a different travel focus from the village’s history of churches and chapels. Nearby, outside Pomezí, the forest chapel Panna Maria Zázračná is located in the Baldecký Forest. If you would like to visit this chapel, check access and opening information locally.
