Mikuleč: The History of the Church of St. George
Accommodation in Mikuleč
The history of Mikuleč can be read in several layers of time at the Church of St. George. The original Gothic predecessor, the late Baroque remodeling, and later additions date from different centuries. The church stands on a hill on the northern edge of the village, in the middle of the cemetery. To understand the place, a specific location is thus linked with a building history that cannot be reduced to a single date of origin.
Church of St. George: Building history in several stages
The original Gothic predecessor was probably founded around the middle of the 14th century in connection with a fortified residence. Only the presbytery survives from the predecessor. The presbytery is the part of the church at the altar. Its Gothic origins therefore belong to the early building history; this does not mean that the entire later building has remained unchanged since that time.
In the second half of the 18th century, the originally Gothic church was remodeled in the late Baroque style. A Neo-Romanesque bell tower was added in the 19th century. The remodeling affected the church, while the bell tower was added later. Neo-Romanesque describes a design inspired by Romanesque forms and does not mean that it dates from the Romanesque period.
The three dates refer to different events: the middle of the 14th century concerns the presumed founding of the predecessor, the second half of the 18th century the remodeling, and the 19th century the tower. This makes it possible to understand the origin, transformation, and later addition as separate stages in the building’s history.
Frescoes based on designs by Mikoláš Aleš
The interior decoration adds another layer to the building’s history: the church has interior frescoes painted in 1899–1900 by pupils of Mikoláš Aleš, based on his designs. The attribution distinguishes between design and execution: the designs are by Aleš, while the frescoes were painted by his pupils. The dates 1899–1900 place the work at the turn of the 20th century. Along with the late Baroque remodeling and the tower, this detail shows that the church’s history continued in several stages.
