Studené – Cliffs, Cycling Route and Sacred Local History

Studené combines a distinctive rocky landscape with cycling paths, quiet chapels and vibrant local traditions. Particularly characteristic are the Studenecké skály: this approximately 500-metre-long group of typical frost cliffs includes individual rock outcrops up to 25 metres high. The cliffs feature climbing routes secured with pitons and bolts, ranging from difficulty grades 3 to 7+ UIAA. This gives the area an unusual contrast between a landscape of natural interest and a sporting challenge.

Cliffs, Nature Parks and Trails

The Orlice Nature Park lies west of Studené. To the east are the Suchý vrch Nature Park and Buková hora mountain. The Studenecké skály can be reached from Těchonín railway station or by car via the road between Těchonín, Vlčkovice and Studené. Those looking for accommodation in Studené can therefore tailor their stay to different interests: the cliffs offer climbing routes and a distinctive landscape, while the surrounding area provides further opportunities for actively exploring the region. One specific way to access the surrounding area is the black “Studenecká” route. This cycling route leads through Zemská brána and its surroundings and starts at the “Podskalák” complex in Studené. The route is considered moderately difficult; the estimated riding time without breaks is 1 hour and 10 minutes. Trekking or mountain bikes are recommended. Where the route runs along a hiking trail, pedestrians have priority. At the “Podskalák” complex, the multi-purpose sports court in front of the restaurant can be used for tennis and nohejbal after reservation.

Churches, Chapels and Local Traditions

The church in Studené was built from 1820 to 1822 and dedicated to Saint Anne. Religious sites with their own history can also be found outside the centre of the village. In Dolní les stands a column chapel dedicated to Saint Anne, whose origins are surrounded by local legends. According to one of these traditions, the image of Saint Anne repeatedly returned from the church construction site to its original tree before it was placed in a small chapel. The small Chapel of Saint Antoníček stands at house number 7. The Langr couple had it built after lightning struck a nearby ash tree in 1914 without setting their house on fire. At the wayside cross in Horní les, an image of Our Lady of Sorrows was rededicated in 2009. According to tradition, the stream emerging beneath the Chapel of Saint Anne contained miraculous water. The landowner, Count Stubenberg, also allowed the locals to create a small square in front of the chapel, build a bridge over the stream and install several benches.

Traditions and Special Dates

The pilgrimage on the Friday of Sorrows is still held in Studené. Services take place as part of it, although they are less well attended today. For Saturday, 29 August 2026, the 23rd edition of the “Závod horských kol” mountain-bike race was announced at the “Kravín”. Another sporting tradition is the “Běh kolem skal”, a mass-start race. Much of its route runs along paved forest roads, while in the middle it passes in an exposed position over a rocky ridge.
