Jeníkov combines a village history that is easy to follow with a natural environment of moor meadows, wetland habitats, and distinctive landscape features. In the center, the smallholders’ cottages are still recognizable; the Chapel of Saint Wenceslas also tells the story of several building phases. Nearby, there are viewpoints and the rise known as Pešava. This mix lets you choose between local history and landscape themes when considering Jeníkov as a travel destination.

Village History and Former Occupations

Jeníkov developed as a forest-row village: farmsteads stood on both sides of the road. In the village center, the original development, with smallholders’ cottages, is still recognizable. These features tell different parts of the settlement’s history: the forest-row layout describes the village’s original arrangement, while the smallholders’ cottages reveal the more modest scale of the built-up center. The separate settlement group known as “Na dolním konci,” located on the so-called village green, is also part of the village’s history. Its houses were homes to former landless laborers. The residents’ main historical occupations were foothill farming, pottery, and weaving. Thus, alongside the village layout, work and crafts also emerge as defining parts of historical life.

The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas

The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas stands in the center of Jeníkov. It dates from 1900 and was built on the site of an earlier wooden bell tower. The chapel was renovated and consecrated in 2010. Its wrought-iron fence was made by artist blacksmith Pavel Jekl. Its building history therefore includes an earlier bell tower, the construction of the chapel, and subsequent work on the building. The municipality also offers an online tour of the exhibition “Jeníkov v proměnách času” (Jeníkov Through the Changes of Time); the exhibition is dated August 15, 2022. This digital tour offers another way to explore the history and changes of the village.

Moor Meadows, Biodiversity, and Views

The Louky v Jeníkově area is characterized by a variety of wetland habitats. Wet sedge communities lie in moor meadows with reeds, at the site of former ponds that had silted up. Other habitats include transition mires, calcareous-poor quaking bogs, tall-sedge stands, wet marsh thistle meadows and wet meadowsweet stands, seasonally wet purple moor-grass meadows, and Nardus grasslands. These habitats are home to protected and endangered plant and animal species. The area hosts numerous populations of common frogs, green frogs, and common toads. Sand lizards and adders also live there. The usual restrictions that apply in a protected area should be observed when watching wildlife.

The surrounding area also offers a range of landscape views: a hill near Jeníkov offers views towards Kameničky, Žákova hora, and Devět skal near Herálec. Pešava, 697 meters high, lies north of the village and is the highest elevation in the Železné hory. Moor meadows, biodiversity, viewpoints, and this prominent high point represent different facets of the surrounding area.
