Potštejn offers several ways to explore its cultural history: at the castle, a Stations of the Cross commemorates the history of the place; at the chateau, guided tours take you through the interiors; and the Vojenské muzeum presents an extensive collection of historical exhibits. This picture is complemented by church buildings, a house of prayer and the woodland of Modlivý důl. Potštejn therefore offers different starting points for a trip where history, architecture and nature stand side by side.

Potštejn Castle and the Křížová cesta Stations of the Cross

The Křížová cesta Stations of the Cross leads from Městečko to Potštejn Castle. It was established around 1750 by Anna Barbora Harbuval ze Chamaré. Its final station, Boží hrob, is located in the lower castle courtyard opposite the Baroque Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk. The combination of the path, its stations and the castle courtyard makes the Stations of the Cross a distinct historical approach to the castle.

The fourth entrance gate of Potštejn Castle houses an exhibition on the castle’s history. Anyone who does not want to limit their visit to the exterior grounds will find a specific opportunity here to engage with its past. In addition, Potštejn Chateau offers regular guided tours of its interiors. When planning a trip, the distinction between an independent walk around the castle and a guided visit to the chateau interiors is therefore relevant.

Chateau, Church and House of Prayer

Potštejn Chateau was built in 1749 by Count Jan Ludvík Harbuval Chamaré. Alongside the regular interior tours, entertaining tours are offered in Baroque costumes. The chateau therefore provides different tour formats, so its historical character is conveyed through more than just dates.

The Church of St. Lawrence is also one of Potštejn’s documented cultural monuments. It was rebuilt between 1815 and 1821 in the Empire style. Inside is an altarpiece of Saint Lawrence by Antonín Machek from 1819. The present-day house of prayer of the Unity of the Brethren in Potštejn dates from 1899 and adds another architectural accent to the history of the town.

Museum and the Woodland of Modlivý důl

The Vojenské muzeum Potštejn focuses on a collection of currently more than 400 exhibits, the vast majority of which are historical originals. The museum has one important particularity for visitors: it is open to visitors only by prior arrangement via email. The chateau, by contrast, offers regular guided tours. Anyone wishing to include both institutions in their plans should take these different visiting arrangements into account.

Modlivý důl adds an aspect connected with nature. A woodland with the original tree-species composition of the forests in the Střední Poorličí area is protected there. Potštejn can therefore be viewed not only through its buildings and collections, but also through the preserved composition of a forest.
