Lukavec u Hořic combines a meadow valley at the northern foot of the wooded Chlum Hills with traces of a long local history. Forests surround the town on three sides, and the Byšičky Natural Monument adds a special natural area. If you are looking for accommodation, you can consider whether the landscape, history, or a combination of the two will shape your stay.

Landscape and the Byšičky Natural Monument

The Byšičky Natural Monument covers the cadastral area of Lukavec u Hořic. Most of the area consists of forests with varying compositions, some of them natural. Several ponds and unique peat meadows in the flood zone adjoin them. The area is an important biocenter in a landscape that is predominantly agricultural. Forest, water and wetlands thus sit alongside the meadow-filled valley where the town lies.

The Lukavecký Stream is also part of the local landscape. It flows through Lukavec u Hořic and is also known as the Lukava, Lukavec or Lukavý. Its source is at Osmik Pond near the Byšičky forester’s lodge. Those interested in the town’s natural setting will find several distinct landscape features here: the wooded surroundings, the ponds and peat meadows of the protected area, and the stream.

Historical traces in the town

Lukavec was founded in the first half of the 13th century. The original settlement included a manor farm, three to five farmsteads and a fortress. The former fortress was demolished in the 18th century. It probably stood near today’s House No. 44; changes in the terrain from former defensive ditches and ramparts remain from its layout. The tentative identification of the site is itself part of the history of the place.

Some timber houses in Lukavec u Hořic date from the late 18th or early 19th century. The Lukavecký Cross stands opposite the municipal building: it was erected in 1844 and restored in 1880 and 1896. A stone memorial bearing the names of the fallen was built in 1922 on a rise in the town center. These landmarks offer different perspectives, from the older settlement pattern to a religious monument and a memorial to the fallen.

Memorial events are held at the war memorial on 28 October to celebrate the founding of the state. During the gathering of former residents, a procession also makes its way to the memorial. For your travel planning, these local connections offer a different way to experience the area than its landscape: they draw attention to Lukavec’s history and traditions of collective remembrance.

Cycling route and bathing area

Cycling route No. 4135 passes through Lukavec u Hořic. Check the current signage before setting out. A bathing area is located in a fire-fighting pond. Entering and swimming are at your own risk; check the conditions on site before use. The recreational options therefore differ distinctly: the cycling route helps with tour planning, while the bathing area comes with an explicit statement of personal responsibility.
