Landscape and views around Bukvice

Bukvice lies on the southern slope of the Velišský hřbet ridge. The landscape around the village is characterized by fields, meadows, hills and forests, offering a clear contrast to a purely urban trip. From Bukvice (318 m above sea level) and Křelina (368 m above sea level), you can enjoy views of the Český ráj panorama with the Prachovské skály rock formations, as well as of the landscape that gradually transitions into the Polabská nížina lowlands. Those who would like to combine nature observation, scenic views and cultural discoveries when choosing their holiday destination will find several different starting points in Bukvice.

Historical traces in the village

The history of the village is documented in writing back to the Middle Ages: the first written mention of Bukvice appears in a royal charter issued by John of Luxembourg on 12 March 1327. In the village’s present-day appearance, you will also encounter several sacred monuments from different periods. The Baroque Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk dates from 1767. A crucifixion group from 1740 stands in the village square, while a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1765 can be seen at the other end of the village. The village square, chapel and statue are not located at a single point but form different historical reference points within Bukvice.

Paths for hiking and cycling

The field paths are also part of the area’s character. A yellow-marked hiking trail runs along field path HC1. For active exploration by bicycle, the field paths between Bukvice and Křelina are among the options, as they are suitable for cycling. In addition, the Bukvice–Křelina field-path project connects Bukvice with the cadastral area of Nadslav. This allows different focuses to be chosen when planning a trip: the yellow-marked hiking trail on HC1 is an established hiking option, while the connection between Bukvice and Křelina is particularly relevant for orientation on a cycling tour.

Quests and regional art

The tourist information centre in Bukvice offers quests from Mariánská zahrada. These include “Putování po lesních kapličkách Mariánské zahrady”. If you would like to explore the area not only through individual sights but also along a predefined theme, this quest is an independent way to shape your stay. The information mentions the quest offering, but not a specific itinerary or time requirement.

Another cultural highlight is the “Na Špejcharu” Gallery. The private married couple Eva and Jiří Valter opened the “Na Špejcharu” Gallery in their weekend house in 2004. The operators make the attic available to other artists. Thus, alongside the village’s historical monuments, Bukvice also offers a place for changing artistic uses. When choosing between a more history-focused stay and additional cultural discoveries, the village therefore offers several clearly distinguishable themes.
