Bašnice combines landscape, local history and active exploration. The municipality lies in the Podchlumí microregion, whose sandstone deposits shaped the local architecture and became the livelihood of the stonemasons and sculptors working there. The former name Bašněves is also part of the history of the place. Bašnický les lies west of Bašnice and was designated a natural monument in 1990. When looking for accommodation in Bašnice, cultural and historical traces therefore meet a clearly recognisable landscape feature.

Landscape and Historical Evidence

Bašnický les contains Slavic burial mounds dating from the 9th century. The forest therefore represents not only the nature surrounding Bašnice, but also preserves an indication of the region’s early history. Anyone interested in the connection between landscape and the past will find a specific focus here for their own local research.

Another historical trace is the former fortress of Bašnice. The first record of it dates from 1499; by 1542, the fortress had already been abandoned. According to tradition, it stood near the bridge over the Bašnický potok and not far from the bell tower. This chronological classification is important: it was a former structure, not a fortress attraction currently described as operating.

Village Landscape with Cross and Memorial

At the eastern edge of Bašnice, at the intersection towards Milovice u Hořic, a stone cross stands on a column. The cross dates from 1767 and was restored in 2009. In the centre of the village, a memorial on an open area at the intersection towards Bříšťany commemorates those who fell in the First World War. The memorial is dated 1928; the associated granite plaque dates from 1921. This memorial was also restored in 2009.

This gives you a village landscape in which individual landmarks make different layers of history visible: the traditional location of the fortress, the Baroque stone cross and the more recent war memorial with its older granite plaque.

Cycling and Time Outdoors

The “Zámecká cyklotrasa Hořice” cycling route between Milovice and Dobrá Voda u Hořic passes through Bašnice. The route is suitable for trekking bikes and, where appropriate, racing bikes as well; it follows paved roads.

Families with children will find a public playground near the Sokolovna. It was built in 2013 and is intended for children aged 3 to 12. In addition, borrowing items from the Bašnice library is free of charge. These two details help you distinguish between an active cycling tour, time spent in the village and a suitable option for children when planning your stay.
