Discover Zádolí: History and Hiking Trail
Accommodation in Záhorí
On Müller’s 1720 map, Zádolí appears under the name “Sadoly”; this map is currently considered the oldest known mention of the settlement. Historical entries from the 18th and 19th centuries, an amateur theatre group, the war memorial, and a red-marked hiking trail provide further concrete points of reference. You can get to know Zádolí through both its history and as a stop on the Sedlčany–Neveklov route, which passes through the settlement.
Local History on the Map and in Numbers
Jaroslav Schaller’s topography recorded 14 houses in Zádolí in 1788. In 1848, František Palacký listed 19 houses and 162 inhabitants. The two entries capture different aspects: the 1788 figure gives the number of houses, while Palacký’s 1848 entry also lists inhabitants. This gives a tangible sense of the chronology and scale without reducing the settlement’s history to a single date.
Theatre Group History and War Memorial
The “Josef Kajetán Tyl” amateur theatre group was founded in Zádolí in 1929. Its members established a library with more than 300 volumes. The group is therefore linked in the settlement’s history both to amateur theatre and to the founding of a library. For travellers interested in local culture, this aspect of the group’s history adds another perspective to the historical records of houses and inhabitants: here, cultural history is also reflected in community initiatives.
The war memorial marks a different chapter. Local stonemason František Tabulka created it; it was unveiled in 1936. The name and date provide two concrete points of reference for placing the memorial in Zádolí’s history. Together with the group’s history, they create a picture that encompasses both cultural activities and a memorial to the past.
Community Gatherings and Local Traditions
Community gatherings are also among the recorded glimpses of local life. A community newsletter from January/February 2025 reported on a traditional neighbourhood gathering in October, where children and their parents could hollow out and carve pumpkins together. The shared activity of children and parents is particularly vivid. The same issue reported on a traditional Christmas tree lighting on 1 December, with Christmas carols and mulled wine. The events each have a different focus: the gathering centres on carving together, while the tree lighting features carols and mulled wine.
Plan Your Hike and Overnight Stay
The red-marked Sedlčany–Neveklov hiking trail passes through Zádolí, making it a practical point of reference for planning your hike. Here, the route is the focus, while the historical entries relate to the settlement’s history. Check the current trail conditions and markings before setting out. This will help you include the route in your plans and treat the historical topics as a different focus for your stay.
If you are considering an overnight stay in Zádolí, having a clear priority can help with planning: would you like to get to know the settlement mainly through its history, or should the hiking trail be an important part of your trip? This question can help you choose accommodation whose location suits your travel plans.
