Discover Dunice: Local History and Notable Places
Accommodation in Dunice
Dunice combines a circular settlement layout with a local history visible in its buildings, natural features, and community facilities. The chapel, linden tree, mill, and footbridge over the stream offer different points of interest. Anyone looking for accommodation in Dunice can also get a sense of the town through its historical and community aspects.
From Settlement Layout to Local History
The circular settlement layout has led to the theory that a hillfort stood on the site of Dunice in the 10th century. The first written mention dates to 1352. A confirmation charter issued by King Charles IV confirmed ownership at that time. The two dates relate to different aspects: the early fortification is a historical interpretation of the layout, while the 14th-century mention is documented in writing.
After the Josephine cadastre was introduced, Dunice already had 18 house numbers in 1835. At the time, the village center had an inn and a blacksmith’s workshop. The number of house numbers gives a concrete sense of the village’s size at the time; the inn and workshop point to hospitality and craft as parts of village life. This dated snapshot from the 19th century thus complements the interpretation of the circular layout.
A historical road maintenance obligation also offers a glimpse into Dunice’s past. Residents had to keep the road from Senožaty to Křivsoudov passable. It formed part of the old route from Prague to Jihlava and ran along the border between Svatavins and the episcopal district. The residents were responsible for maintaining this road, linking local daily life with a larger historical route.
Chapel, Linden Tree, and Mill
The chapel in Dunice was built before 1882 and has an electric bell mechanism. Right next to it stands a linden tree approximately 300 years old, planted to commemorate the abolition of compulsory labor. The chapel and memorial tree offer two distinct points of interest: a trace of the built environment and a reminder of social change.
Dunice has an electrically powered mill, which was put back into operation in May 1992. The specific date gives the local history of technology a point of reference, while the electric drive is another notable detail.
Footpaths and Community Facilities
A footpath with a pedestrian bridge over the stream was built in Dunice. Alongside the history of individual buildings, this also brings local pedestrian infrastructure into focus.
The sports room above the shop was set up for young people, and the dance floor was renovated. The municipality describes the sports and children’s playground as frequently visited by people of all ages.
