Budweis (České Budějovice): Old Town and Day Trips

Budweis is a good base if you want to explore a walkable old town, take a Budvar brewery tour and visit destinations in South Bohemia. If you especially want to experience Český Krumlov in the evening, it’s better to stay overnight there rather than make daily return trips.

Budweis at a glance

  • Location: České Budějovice lies at the confluence of the Vltava and Malše rivers; King Přemysl Otakar II founded the city in 1265.
  • City visit: The historic center is arranged around Přemysl Otakar II Square, the Samson Fountain, the Baroque Town Hall and the 72-meter-high Black Tower.
  • Brewery: As of 10 October 2026, the Budvar Visitor Center lists opening hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily; German-language tours for individual visitors are available by reservation at 2:20 p.m., last around 70 to 80 minutes, and cost CZK 290 full price or CZK 220 discounted. Tastings are for visitors aged 18 and over only.
  • Hluboká: Buses connect Budweis with Hluboká nad Vltavou; the central stop is called “Pod kostelem.” Castle tours and opening hours vary by season.
  • Český Krumlov: There is a rail connection from České Budějovice; departures depend on the day of travel and the current timetable.

Old Town: a compact walking tour

Start at the expansive Přemysl Otakar II Square. The regular street layout, historic arcaded houses and Baroque Town Hall show that Budweis was laid out as a planned royal city. The Samson Fountain stands in the middle of the square; just beyond it, St. Nicholas Cathedral and the Black Tower shape the city skyline. From the tower gallery, you can look out over the rooftops and across the surrounding area.

For a first visit, it’s worth taking a walk from the square to the cathedral and Black Tower, then on past the Wortner House and the Na Sadech green space. The city route also takes in the South Bohemian Museum and streets where you can spot remnants of the former fortifications. As a planning estimate, a few hours is usually enough for the square and the main sights; add the museum, exhibitions or a leisurely lunch and you have a full day in the city. Budweis is more than a stop for a brewery photo: as the regional capital, it brings together culture, dining and an easily accessible base for exploring further afield.

Visiting Budvar: tour and getting there

If you’d like to visit the brewery, reserve your tour in advance. Budvar lists a German-language tour for individual visitors at 2:20 p.m. year-round; outside July and August, this is the regular daily time for German-language tours. The tour lasts around 70 to 80 minutes. As of 10 October 2026, tickets cost CZK 290 full price and CZK 220 at a reduced rate; tastings are not for minors. The brewery visit works well after a morning in the old town, but it’s not something to squeeze into the same day as two excursions farther afield.

Through 30 November 2026, city bus line 2 is interrupted between the Družba IGY and Budějovický Budvar stops. If visiting during this period, check the Budvar Visitor Center’s latest information on tours, admission and how to get there.

Plan separate day trips for Hluboká and Krumlov

Hluboká nad Vltavou Castle is an easy choice for a day trip of its own. According to the city’s transport information, buses run between Budweis and Hluboká; the Pod kostelem stop is centrally located in town. For October 2026, the castle calendar checked on 10 October 2026 listed the representative rooms as open Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.; an additional Monday opening was listed for 26 October. The same calendar gives shorter opening hours, until 4 p.m., for 1 November. These are specific calendar listings, not year-round opening hours. Choose a tour that fits your visit date, and plan how to get there before you arrive in Budweis. The guide to Hluboká nad Vltavou Castle provides more context.

Český Krumlov is a better choice if you want to wander through a historic center with a castle, museums and galleries, and spend the evening there. The České dráhy timetable checked on 10 October 2026 listed trains on the České Budějovice–Český Krumlov–Černý Kříž route; specific departures vary by timetable and date. Budweis works well for a day trip if you plan to return afterward. If you’d prefer a more leisurely visit and an evening stroll in Krumlov, stay overnight there. Where to stay and what else to explore in the region

Choose Budweis as your base if the city, brewery and Hluboká are your main destinations, or if you want to avoid changing accommodation. If Krumlov is your main focus, it makes more sense to spend a night there; Lipno and other scenic destinations work well as a separate day trip. The South Bohemia overview puts Budweis, Krumlov and other highlights of the region in context. To choose where to stay, compare accommodation in South Bohemia; if traveling by train, consider how close it is to the station, and if driving, make sure parking is confirmed. The Lipno Reservoir offers a different kind of stay from the city center. If you’re planning several days in nature, the overview of nature and landscapes in Czechia may also be useful.

FAQ / Frequently asked questions about Budweis

Is one day enough for Budweis?

A full day can be enough for the central walking tour and a reserved Budvar tour. It’s better to add the museum, longer visits and a trip to Hluboká or Krumlov on another day; don’t treat those two excursions as casual stops on your city day.

Budweis or Český Krumlov for an overnight stay?

Budweis works as an urban base for the brewery and Hluboká, and for regional rail travel. Stay overnight in Český Krumlov if you want to experience the historic center in the evening and avoid having to time your visit around the return trip to Budweis.
